This hymn was composed as a response hymn to the Exsultet, the great prayer of praise offered at the beginning of the Easter Vigil service. Originally written in 8 stanzas, it can easily be shortened.

Set to the tune Personent Hodie, it is especially effective as a parallel hymn to "On this Day, Earth Shall Ring," the famous Christmas Carol set to the same music.
